Jan 31, 2010 - Bummer....

Well, I decided to give my knee until Thursday 1/28 to start feeling better. When it didn't feel better I decided to give it until Friday.... but it only got worse. So I decided to head home on Saturday and moved my 4th and final week at the Ridge to Jan 2011. I am so discouraged. I had wanted to hit the ground running when I got home, but had to spend the day with ice on my knee and with it elevated to try to get the swelling down. I will make an appt with a doctor tomorrow. But the good news is I lost a total of 7 lbs. In the 2 weeks and 1 day I was able to follow the program. I feel GREAT about that and about my ability to stick to the sensible eating and exercise.

Who wants to come with me next January???

Love you all! Will let you know how my knee recovery turns out.

Jan 26, 2010 Tuesday Tastes Just Like Chicken!

Well, actually it tastes a lot like beef. We had Ostrich Stew for dinner. It was really tasty. Not sure if I’d add it to my regular menu but it was interesting to try. Dinner was served with a roll and I quickly came to the conclusion that, for me, a roll is just a butter delivery system. I didn’t eat it all. 2 chocolate covered strawberries for dessert which I, again, cut up into tiny pieces making sure each piece had some chocolate on it. Yum. The chef just dips them in melted chocolate chips.

Didn’t go on the hike today because of my knee. I worked in the gym with Annamarie, my trainer. She showed me more core, back and upper body exercises. I can only remember a very few of them—they all blend after a while. She said she will write them all down for me and will send me home with a full body routine. I will be happy to share these notes when I get back.

On a typical day with the 2 and half hour hike and 4 or 5 fitness classes, I have been burning 3000 – 3600 calories per day. I am going to wear my heart rate monitor all day tomorrow and see how much I burn with my knee injury.

I did get up today for the optional early class “Hardcore.” In the afternoon, instead of doing “Step and Pump” (affectionately known here as Step and Puke…) I did an extra pool class. Now that I am getting stronger, I am venturing out into the deep end more and more. I swam 3 full lengths of the pool (1½ laps) without stopping. I can’t do the crawl stroke, but I can do the breast stroke.

We have an NFL player, Ephraim Salaam, and his wife here this week. He is HUGE! Even he finds the classes challenging.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAMIE!!!

Mon Jan 25, 2010 – Just A Running Fool!

Got up early for Pilates. I am getting better. Still can’t do a sit up but I’m determined.
Did the “Stop Sign” walk today. The sun was out and the air was dry so I was feeling pretty good. About half way to the Mini-Stop Sign, I met up with a guide who said, “Try to get to mini without any stops.” And I thought to myself, “I can do better than that!” And I tried running!!!! I definitely can’t go fast or for any length of time, but by golly, I’m running!!

The steep incline walk along the real road was not too bad today. I kept a steady pace and just went from crack in the road to crack in the road. I did stop for a potty break but that was my only stop. I made it to the Stop Sign in 1hr 29 mins.

When we got back, I had a choice of Pool or treadmill. Being the running fool that I am, I chose treadmill. I can run for about 2 mins at a 1% incline at 4.0 mph. So I spent 45 mins running and recovering. BUT-my left knee started to hurt. DRATS. My poor knees are saying, “What the heck’s going on here?!?” I am sitting with some ice on it, took some Advil and will baby it the rest of the day. I don’t want it to get worse. Hmmm… is this my first “sport injury?”

Sun Jan 24, 2010 – Rest

There are no activities scheduled for today. I am thinking about going in to the gym for an hour, but I’m still sore. Maybe I’ll spend an hour stretching and working on my flexibility instead of pounding away on the treadmill. (Did I mention that I can RUN on the treadmill!!) I tell everyone I see…

Oh—I got weighed and lost 5 lbs!! YAY!! I didn’t lose any weight the first week, but I knew I got stronger so it didn’t discourage me. This week I know I am stronger AND I lost weight!!

Jan 23, 2010 - Saturday Snow & Ice

Another day, another hike! We usually do the “Stop Sign” hike on Sat and Mon. The first 3½ miles or so are along a paved uphill path. I don’t really like it because it’s a continuous incline and the pavement is hard on my old bones. At the end of this path is the “Mini-Stop Sign” and then you enter onto an actual road that continues at an even steeper incline. The elevation change is 3000’ at the bottom of the hike to 4000’ at the top. But today there was much SNOW at the top and black ice along the road. 2 people fell (one hurt her arm, the other hurt his ego…) on black ice along the path part. I chose to do the West Canyon hike; it’s a gravel and fairly level trail.

After lunch, we had free time until dinner. I went to Coyote Gulch—a grouping of art shops with 3 other ladies. It was nice to get off campus. The sun was shining and the art was very nice.

I was really feeling homesick today. When I am kept busy, I don’t have time to think. But free time today had me missing my kids and friends—and even my Dwaine.

We went to the movies as a group last night. I wanted to test myself around popcorn and soda. I enjoyed the smells but didn’t have any desire to eat anything.

I do find that I think about eating (when I’m not hungry) when I am not occupied. I have to get used to sitting idly and not eating just because I’m bored. I was talking with one of the trainers who walked along with me on the hike. She said she keeps chocolate chips in the fridge and has just a few to take care of any chocolate cravings. My problem is that the bag of chocolate chips calls to me until it’s completely empty.

I can’t have bad foods in the house. This is hard because I live with other people who like to eat bacon and buttered popcorn and candy and soda and…. Jamie told me before I left that when I get home I have to have willpower. If I had willpower, I wouldn’t be in this predicament. I think I will have to explain to my family that I will need their help and support when I get home. I’m thinking the best way to do it is if we want to have ice cream one night, we buy enough for that night and not leave the container in the freezer for days afterwards.

I do like that we are learning not to diet, but to eat differently. People tend to eat the same volume of food every day—we just have to make sure we have good foods instead of worthless food. AND—we are learning the 90/10 rule. It’s OK to eat crap 10% of the time. (So you don’t have to give up Hershey bars, you just can’t eat the whole package of 36 at one sitting.)

Jan 22, 2010 - Friday

Today I felt a little “off.” I stayed up late chatting with my roommate, and didn’t get to sleep until 9 PM. So I didn’t get up for 6 AM Kickboxing. Drats. I really like kickboxing!!
Breakfast was a Greek yogurt parfait with fresh fruit and granola.
I went on the Hidden Pinyon hike (101) again. We hiked through sand, and then over and around rocks. Toward the end of the hike we climbed up these big hills of sandstone. The sandstone is in layers, kind of like wrinkles or the skin of a Sharpei dog.
The rocks are also very “sticky,” something I’m not used to. So you can climb up and come down a 45 degree or more incline and still maintain your footing. You have to point your toes down or uphill and take small, confident steps. When I first went on the sandstone last week, I thought for sure I was going to slip down the rocks. But I learned to trust my feet.
When we got back from the hike, we had a wonderful stretch class where we worked on flexibility. I keep hearing Caley saying, “Mom, when you’re old, you want to be able to wipe yourself.” I do. I really do.
Dinner was a turkey burger and raw vegetables. It was really good. I talked to Dwaine about raising more turkeys instead of a cow in the future. For dessert we had Chocolate Ice which I’m told is just Chocolate Silk milk frozen and smashed up.
It has been raining here and it’s been cold and miserable. Locals aren’t used to this much rain. Yesterday they canceled the Pool classes because of the weather so we did a circuit on the weight machines.
